Business Overview
The
Company develops and markets industry performance leading, power Metal
Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (“MOSFETs”) that reside
in power management applications.
SSC’s
strategy is to position itself as the leader in high performance, high
margin power management products providing advantages in major industry
benchmarks.
Power
management is an enabling technology as all electronic devices require not
only power, but also management of power to multiple components within a
product. The power management
of such products is extremely important as companies push technological
bounds and innovate smaller, faster and cheaper electronic products (e.g.,
notebook computers). The constant innovation creates a significant market push
towards new products (e.g., Intel’s Centrino processor) matched by the
market pull from consumers and businesses for these advanced, smaller and
cheaper products.
World
Renowned Founder
SSC’s
product platform is based on the patented work of its founder and
world-renowned semiconductor expert, Dr. B. Jayant (“Jay”) Baliga.
Dr.
Baliga is one of the most accomplished scientific minds in the industry.
He has been awarded
over 110 patents, written 10 books and co-authored over 550 publications.
Scientific
American
magazine named Dr. Baliga one of the “eight heroes of the semiconductor
revolution.” While an
executive at General Electric, he invented the Insulated Gate Bipolar
Transistor (“IGBT”), a device that generates annual worldwide revenues
of over $800 million. Dr.
Baliga is also a member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering
(U.S. & Europe).
Products
& Technology
SSC
has focused its core, silicon platform to introduce the Company’s
initial fourteen (14) power management semiconductors, led by its
revolutionary Junction Barrier controlled Schottky field effect transistor
(“JBSFETTM”), a monolithic power MOSFET and Schottky diode solution for
high-current, microprocessor and communication power applications.
SSC’s
power management product line allows a reduction in resistance per unit
area (mΩ -cm²), and charge per unit area (nC/cm²), as well as the
elimination of undesirable parasitic devices (e.g., MOSFET body diode).
The combination of dramatic improvements in resistance and charge
reduction makes both the JBSFETTM as well as the standard SSC power MOSFET
performance leading products by a significant margin.
These
products enable substantial power conversion improvements and makes it
possible for notebooks, servers, portables and other electronic devices to
significantly advance speed, functionality and form factor.
Competitive
Advantages
The primary Power MOSFET
performance advantages of the Company’s initial products include:
-
Significantly
faster switching speeds which
improve efficiency, support faster microprocessor speeds and reduce
the size of passive components and overall equipment size;
-
Dramatically
improved Figure of Merit (FOM) of the JBSFETTM that
allows manufacturers to place more components in the same unit area
and utilize next generation processors for performance improvements;
and
-
Standard
industry-wide accepted packages such
as the S08, MLF, TSSOP, DPAK and TO220 packages allow for quick starts
at targeted customers.
Substantial
Intellectual Property Portfolio
SSC
has developed broad intellectual property rights covering the Company’s
unique, high performance power semiconductor technologies, power devices
and innovative packaging.
Fabless
Production Model
The
Company’s fables production model accelerates product delivery and
significantly reduces capital expenditures and related investment while
allowing SSC to focus on its core strength in design and commercialization
of semiconductor devices.
Commercially
Available Manufacturing Process
SSC’s
power products are manufactured on a commercially available silicon
platform using standard fabrication equipment.
SSC’s traditional silicon process enables ready transfer to other
foundries providing dual sourcing and redundancy, thereby avoiding
reliance on a single custom foundry or line.
This flexible approach allows SSC to have a cost advantage over
competitor’s products that are produced using more complex manufacturing
processes.
